Endodontal Treatment
It is the domain of Dentistry that has to do with the diagnosis and treatment of pulpal and periapical diseases.
The pulp is the soft tissue that exists in the internal part of the tooth, which contains vases and nerves. Periapical tissue is the bone that surrounds the apex of the tooth.
So when a tooth has caries, bacteria that exist there, irritate the pulp and provoke inflammation known as pulpitis. In this case, endodontic therapy is needed, known as root canal treatment. If that case is not treated, the tooth becomes necrotic, and bacteria come out to the periapical tissues provoking inflammation. This case could end up in very painful situations, like an abscess. That situation can also be healed with endodontic therapy.
Moreover, root canal treatment is indicated in cases of tooth trauma or in cases of previous treatment that has failed either due to new caries or due to malpractice of the previous clinician.
It should be noted that all the cases mentioned are not necessarily accompanied with symptoms of pain. So, endodontic treatment should not be connected with painful situations.
The dentist after taking away the caries from the tooth, removes the inflamed pulp with the appropriate endodontic files that clean and shape the root canals. After that, in a next appointment when the patient’s symptoms are gone, the clinician seals the root canals with gutta-percha.
Endodontic therapy is usually finished in 2-3 appointments according to the complexity of each case. Though there are cases that need more appointments or cases that can be done in a single visit.
Root canal treatment is followed by the final coronal restoration of the tooth. In most cases a crown is suggested to protect the tooth as it has been weakened by the removal of caries and the procedure of cleaning and shaping of the root canals.
